As the Internet has grown, so has the number of database driven web sites. This page provides annotated links to online databases which can be useful to health educators involved in program planning and grant writing.

Adolescent Pregnancy

The California Wellness Foundation
Just released a report on California teen pregnancy hot spots which identify locations with high teenage birth rates in California entitled Adolescents and Their Families in California's Teen Pregnancy Hot Spots. The Built Environment

The Prevention Institute's Thrive Toolkit for "Health and Resilience in Vulnerable Environments" includes information on the built environment. It provides a tool to help you understand and prioritize the factors within your own community that can help improve health and safety. The tool can help answer questions such as: How can I identify key factors in my community and rate their importance? How are these factors related to health outcomes? What can I do to address each factor? Where can I go for more information?

Chronic Disease Prevention

Chronic Disease Indicators

The Chronic Disease Indicators (CDI) is a cross-cutting set of 90 indicators that were developed by consensus and that allows states and territories to uniformly define, collect, and report chronic disease data that are important to public health practice and available at the state level. In addition to providing access to state-specific indicator data, the CDI web site serves as a gateway to additional information and data resources.

Chronic Disease Prevention (CDP) Databases
Provide access to information on chronic disease prevention and health promotion to health professionals responsible for supporting, planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating chronic disease prevention and risk reduction efforts. The databases provide bibliographic citations and abstracts of various types of materials including journal articles, monographs, book chapters, reports, curricular materials, fact sheets, and proceedings.

The Burden of Chronic Diseases and Their Risk Factors:
National and State Perspectives 2002

ERS State Fact Sheets
Contains frequently requested data for each state and for the total United States. These include current data on population, per-capita income, earnings per job, poverty rates, employment, unemployment, farm and farm-related jobs, farm characteristics, farm financial characteristics, top agricultural commodities, top export commodities, and the top counties in agricultural sales. http://www.raconline.org/states/

Human Development Index
The American Human Development Project has announced the introduction of the American Human Development Index, a single measure of well-being for all Americans based on indicators in the areas of health, education, and income. http://measureofamerica.org/well-o-meter/

The Kaiser Family Foundation's State Health Facts Online
Contains the latest state-level data on demographics, health, and health policy, including health coverage, access, financing, and state legislation. http://www.statehealthfacts.kff.org/

The Kaiser Family Foundation - Customized Health Data Sheets
GlobalHealthFacts.org is a free Kaiser Foundation Web site that provides easy access to the latest country-level health information. Now, Web visitors can create customized data sheets comparing up to five countries against any or all of the 100 health, demographic and economic indicators. Each sheet can be viewed online, converted into a PDF file, printed, emailed or saved so it can be easily shared electronically with colleagues, handed out at meetings or briefings, and used for a variety of other purposes.

Disparities/Minority Health

DiversityData.org
Diversitydata.org allows visitors to explore how metropolitan areas throughout the U.S. perform on a diverse range of social measures that comprise a well-rounded life experience. On this website you will find a dataset of socioeconomic indicators for metropolitan areas in the form of tables, thematic maps, and customizable reports. The data covers various racial/ethnic, income and nativity groups. Multiple data sources have been used to show data for numerous domains such as housing opportunities, economic opportunities, residential integration, and health. A series of reports based on the Diversity data indicators are also planned.

The Health Research & Educational Trust Toolkit
This online toolkit is intended to provide hospitals, health systems, clinics and health plans information and resources necessary for collecting race, ethnicity and primary language data from patients to track the prevalence and nature of health disparities and help focus efforts to eliminate disparities and improve quality of care.

HispanicHealth.info
This interactive Web portal from the National Hispanic Medical Association aims to be a resource for health professionals and the public on diabetes and obesity in the Hispanic community. The portal -- HispanicHealth.info, which is available in English and Spanish -- includes the latest research findings and treatments, offers cultural guidance to professionals and allows providers to share information about health issues. The site is funded by the HHS Office of Minority Health, the association, the National Hispanic Health Professions Leadership Network and the association's Council of Medical Societies (NHMA release, 3/20).

HIV/AIDS and Minorities: A Guide to Federal Programs
This website was developed by the Office of HIV/AIDS Policy in response to public inquiries for more information on HIV-related programs administered or initiated by the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). The Guide contains information on the agencies within DHHS that are involved in HIV/AIDS-related activities, highlighting their minorityfocused HIV/AIDS programs.

REACH U.S. Resource Library
Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health Across the U.S. has established a national infrastructure to promote evidence- and practice-based public health programs, community-based participatory approaches, and the integration of systemic influences. REACH U.S. supports and disseminates programmatic activities that are successful in the elimination of racial and ethnic health disparities.

Healthy People 2010

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)
regions are focusing attention and compiling evidence-based resources for selected Healthy People 2010 priorities. Use resource listings, event information, and contacts on this site to get involved in your region's Healthy People 2010 activities and priority area(s). Injury Prevention

National Violent Death Reporting System
The National Violence Prevention Network is a broad-based coalition of national organizations dedicated to violent death prevention by advocating for the full implementation of the
(NVDRS) in the United States. NVDRS is a comprehensive, linked reporting system that collects and centralizes information on homicides and suicides from a variety of sources, such as medical examiners and coroners, law enforcement, hospitals, public health officials and crime labs. Injury Prevention Journal: Full Text Archives
British Medical Journal (BMJ), the parent company of the Injury Prevention Journal, plans on making full-text, archived issues free to view from all of their 23 journals, including the Injury Prevention Journal. You will be able to browse all articles over 12 months old, as well as use their folder feature, which allows you to save interesting articles and searches in a personalised folder. Mental Health Directory of Consumer-Driven Services
The National Mental Health Consumers' Self-Help Clearinghouse has produced a Directory of Consumer-Driven Services (CDS). The purpose of the Directory is to provide consumers, researchers, administrators, service providers, and others with a comprehensive central resource for information on national and local consumer-driven programs. Such programs have a proven track record in helping people recover from mental illnesses. The National Mental Health Consumers' Self-Help Clearinghouse is funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, Center for Mental Health Services. Nutrition and Physical Activity Policy Database
The Prevention Institute, with funding from The California Endowment, announces a searchable database, designed to provide community advocates, health professionals, policymakers and those working in related fields with concrete examples of local-level policies that have been adopted and/or implemented to improve nutrition and physical activity environments. Pesticide Poisoning

Online Pesticide Poisoning Diagnostic Tool
The Pesticide Action Network (PAN) and the Northwest Regional Primary Care Association (NWRPCA) recently launched this new online resource to help health care professionals diagnose and report pesticide related illnesses. Users can access symptom, first aid and treatment information for about 1,900 pesticides. The web site also provides reporting information for all 50 states. www.pesticideinfo.org

ENACT Local Policy Database
Local jurisdictions across California are adopting new policies to improve
opportunities for healthy eating and physical activity. The Strategic Alliance launched the Environmental Nutrition and Activity Community Tool (ENACT) Local Policy Database to capture examples of innovative and practical solutions to concerns such as unhealthy vending, poor air quality, unsafe streets, blight, and economic under-development. Unlike other search engines, theirs returns results only from reviewed and approved sites, obviating the need to sort through thousands of sites to find what you’re looking for.

National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices

This database greatly expands the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s efforts to help local organizations make informed decisions about evidence-based interventions for the prevention and treatment of mental health and substance use disorders. The National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP) is a searchable database with up-to-date, reliable information on the scientific basis and practicality of interventions. Users, such as community organizations and state and local officials, can perform custom searches to identify specific interventions based upon desired outcomes, target populations and service settings. The Women’s Health and Mortality Chartbook
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services recently released a new report, "," a collection of current state data on critical issues of relevance to women’s health. The chartbook ranks each state, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico in 27 indicators, including major causes of death, health risk factors, preventive care, and health insurance. World Health Issues

GlobalHealthFacts.org
Since it was first identified as a public health emergency more than a decade ago, the global tuberculosis (TB) epidemic has leveled off for the first time, according to a World Health Organization (WHO) report released on March 22, 2007. However, while the TB incidence rate remained stable in 2005 compared to the previous year, there were still 8.8 million new TB cases in 2005 and drug-resistant TB, HIV/AIDS and other obstacles stand in the way of controlling the epidemic. Kaiser’s website, GlobalHealthFacts.org, features new TB data just released in the 2007 WHO report, “Global Tuberculosis Control: Surveillance, Planning and Financing.” The site also includes data on TB and HIV co-infection displayed in tables, charts, and color-coded maps and can be downloaded for custom analyses.

Youth and Families / MCH

Young Children’s Health in California
The Center for Health Policy Research and First 5 California released a new
online resource this month. This online data source provides county and regional information on health topics specifically related to children up to five years of age.

Kids Count
This project of the Annie E. Casey Foundation, has expanded its interactive, on-line database of 2000 Census data. This new system provides access to data on families and children in a far simpler and more detailed format than what is currently available from the Census Bureau's web site. Data are presented in three different formats; profiles, rankings, and raw data downloads, for users with a variety of needs and interests.

Preconception and Pregnancy
This Maternal and Child Health electronic resource guide offers a selection of resources that analyze perinatal health statistics, describe effective prenatal care programs, and report on research aimed at improving access to and the quality of prenatal care and improving perinatal health outcomes. Separate sections identify resources on specific aspects of preconception and pregnancy such as folic acid consumption and the adverse effects of environmental exposures, tobacco use, and drugs and alcohol use.
