World Health Issues
GlobalHealthFacts.org
Since it was first identified as a public health emergency
more than a decade ago, the global tuberculosis (TB) epidemic
has leveled off for the first time, according to a World Health
Organization (WHO) report released on March 22, 2007. However,
while the TB incidence rate remained stable in 2005 compared
to the previous year, there were still 8.8 million new TB
cases in 2005 and drug-resistant TB, HIV/AIDS and other obstacles
stand in the way of controlling the epidemic. Kaiser’s
website, GlobalHealthFacts.org, features new TB data just
released in the 2007 WHO report, “Global Tuberculosis
Control: Surveillance, Planning and Financing.” The
site also includes data on TB and HIV co-infection displayed
in tables, charts, and color-coded maps and can be downloaded
for custom analyses.
